Bereavement

What is bereavement?

Bereavement is the time that we spend adjusting to loss. This process cannot be sped-up or generalised because it varies from person to person, and there are no quick fixes for grief. People often ask how long the pain will last, and we think the answer is clear – as long as it needs to be looked after. Put simply, grief shakes everything up; your beliefs, your personality, and even your sense of reality, so it’s imperative to come to terms with what has happened to you. Knowing that there is no right or wrong way to feel during the bereavement period is important – only you can know how to feel at this time. Pain is best managed by learning to look after yourself. This way you can learn to honour what you need, and give yourself the time to adjust and heal, eventually learning how to manage your loss in a healthy way.

How can Clear Counselling help?

Bereavement counselling may be able to provide support during these very difficult times. Talking about your loss often allows you to adjust to your new life with all its changes, and the more these feelings and emotions are discussed the better they will be managed. Grief, although normal, can manifest in a huge range of unexpected ways, so being able to work through issues such as acceptance, numbness, pain, shock, disorganisation and reorganisation can be a very grounding experience. Counselling can help you to feel listened to, and more importantly, hear yourself. It is beneficial for any loss and the feelings surrounding the loss to be acknowledged, as they are stepping stones to moving forward. Discussing this issue in a very safe and caring environment with no emotional attachment or judgement can be very special for both the client and counsellor.
